According to the Nebraska Cancer Coalition, colorectal cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men and women combined in the United States. Colon cancer rates are significantly higher in Nebraska than the national average, with a 42.9% case rate versus the United States’ 38% rate. Over 90% of new diagnosed colon cancer and deaths from colon cancer occur in people 50 or older. However, colon cancer does not discriminate and can happen to men and women at any age.

Screening for colorectal cancer helps prevent this disease. Screening can find precancerous polyps (abnormal growths), so they can be removed before they turn into cancer. Screening also finds colorectal cancer early, when treatment works best.
