Life changed for Gering resident Chelsea Johnston and her 14-year-old son Hayden Gipfert on Aug. 25, when Hayden was in a four-wheeler accident. Chelsea credited Regional West’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) with their astute and efficient action.

“The EMS crew was diligent in staying calm and getting Hayden to the hospital as quickly as possible,” she said. “Dr. McLaren and the ER team were outstanding and able to put back his dislocated hip without needing surgery.”

Hayden was recovering at home when he suffered a stroke three days later, necessitating a transfer to Children's Hospital Colorado Anschutz in Aurora, Colorado, via Regional West’s Air Link helicopter.

“Regional West’s ER nurses were kind and updated me with the information I asked for, and they were calm during the absolute worst moments in my life,” said Chelsea. “Radiology was able to get a brain MRI done before Hayden was transferred, which allowed Children’s to be prepared for the lifesaving thrombectomy when he arrived. The Air Link crew took the time to care for me and make sure they introduced themselves to me before they took my son. These small things played into a bigger purpose and are greatly appreciated.”

After spending six weeks at Children’s Hospital, Hayden returned home and is recovering well. He receives weekly outpatient speech and occupational therapy at Regional West’s Rehab Center.

“Our time at Children’s was excellent, but we were happy to come home to the smiling, caring faces of the Regional West we know,” said Chelsea. “Thank you for the kindness and wonderful care that we received. Our continued care at home with outpatient rehab has been fantastic, and follow-up imaging has been smooth to get scheduled. Thank you all for being great to Hayden.”
