Risk Assessment

The first step toward preventing breast cancer is understanding your risk of developing the disease.

What is my risk for breast cancer?

The average woman has a 12% (one in eight) chance of developing breast cancer in her lifetime. Some women have a higher than average risk for breast cancer. This may be due to a family history, dense breast tissue, hormonal factors, history of abnormal breast biopsies, and/or other factors. Ancestry can also play a role—women of Ashkenazi Jewish descent* are more likely to develop a form of hereditary breast cancer.

Exceptional Care & Exceptional Staff

Exceptional care

  • Advanced equipment, including 3D tomography, CAD, ultrasound, MRI, wire localizations, and stereotactic breast biopsy.
  • No cost barriers to receiving mammograms. Medicare, as well as most insurance policies, cover regular mammograms. The Breast Health Center never turns down a woman for a mammogram if she cannot pay.
    • In addition, the "Every Woman Matters" program provides help for women needing financial assistance.

Genetic Counseling & Testing

About five to 10% of breast cancer is hereditary

A genetic counselor can provide a detailed risk assessment of your personal and family history. After reviewing this history, he or she may recommend genetic testing for one or more cancer predisposition syndromes such as Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Syndrome (caused by mutations in the BRCA1/2 genes). If you are found to carry a mutation in a gene associated with a cancer predisposition syndrome, you and your medical team can work together to form a more personalized treatment and management plan.
